E-mail Case Study – What Do Your Subscribers Really Want?

When maintaining a list of subscribers, your subscribers expect to hear from you at least once per day. Otherwise, they tend to forget about you.

But what type of content should you send to them? Everyone says, “deliver value”. But what does that really mean? No one has elaborated on just what valuable e-mail content is supposed to be.

I struggled with this for years and failed miserably when e-mailing my list. My subscribers were bored. Open rates were pitiful, no matter what type of content I sent to them.

It’s tough coming up with engaging e-mail content on a daily basis.

 And Then I Had an Idea

I finally got fed up with the whole matter.

It happened one night while I was laying in bed, thinking – what do these people really need from me? How do I get them to take that next baby-step that will move their lives forward in a positive direction?

And then it happened. BOOM! Just like that the idea that had eluded me for years suddenly popped into my head.

They want my help. Duh.

Should that be so hard to figure out? I had given them everything but my help. I felt pretty stupid when thinking this through.

They subscribed to my list because either:

They like my offer but know nothing of me and want to see if I’m willing to work with them.
They don’t know yet if I can be trusted.
They liked what I offer but can’t afford it right now.
They want to know more but are not willing to commit to what I have to offer.
They like the offer but want to hear more about it.
They are skeptical of the offer and/or me and want to test both a bit longer.
They want something for free and they might get it by subscribing to my list.

There could be any number of reasons why they are on my list yet say nothing and do nothing.

But the purpose of this article is not to try and figure out why folks subscribe to my list. The purpose is to the take a look at a total change in my strategy for communicating with my list of subscribers and see what happened once I began sharing with them differently.

I made the conscious decision to help them as best I could. And I think that this is a strategy I’m going to stick with.

Why? Because I believe we online marketers are compensated for our efforts in direct proportion to the amount of effort we expend in helping others.

Lets look at The Actual E-mail Content in This Case Study

The following is an example of the tripe that I usually send to my list of subscribers. It basically communicates some news of a new marketing funnel and pitches them to join The Four Percent Group by going through the marketing funnel.

I should mention that these subscribers have already been through a Four Percent Group marketing funnel at least once.

So all this e-mail really does is ask them to go through yet another marketing funnel and see if the content in that funnel resonates with them enough to trigger their decision to join The Four Percent Group.

This e-mail really accomplished nothing since only four out of a list of 1,500 subscribers chose to check out the new marketing funnel that I just promoted to them. Obviously, running through various marketing funnels does not meet their needs and wants at this point in time. They want something else.

At this point is when I had my epiphany and decided I need to help these folks instead of giving them a daily news report on what’s happening in The Four Percent Group.

And when I made that decision, my intention was to give it to them raw and tell it like it is. I’m good at that. I like to shoot from the hip. I hate wishy-washy beat around the bush type stuff. I can’t stand small-talk and useless chatter.

I just never thought anyone would be receptive to this abrupt approach. But I didn’t care anymore. I was tired of being ignored by my subscribers so I was going to tell it like it is. Their lives suck, and they need to change instead of sitting around on their thumbs expecting to win the lottery.

Take a look at the next e-mail I sent to my list and the abrupt change in tone. Note how I got straight to the point in the Subject Line, “Getting what you want”. That got their attention.

The open rate on this e-mail was pretty impressive. But I wasn’t sure yet if I was onto something. I was taking the risk of alienating my whole list. But I didn’t care. I wanted to know if they would be receptive to my help.

Also, notice how I let them know that I’m not done yet speaking about this topic. I let them know that I’m going to pick up where I left off in tomorrow’s e-mail, so they will be looking for that message in anticipation.

E-Mail Message #1  of 4 (this is the stuff they want to hear from you)

Subject: IMPORTANT – Getting what you want – Chapter One

Hi Peeps,

Before I forget, there are a couple of exciting things happening next week in The Four Pecent Group that will impact YOU directly. I can’t go into detail now. But you will be the first to know of these announcements. Cool stuff coming.

Secondly, I did some heavy thinking last week and asked myself if I was really serving your needs by keeping you informed on what’s happening at TECademics and Four Percent.

I don’t think so. So we are changing gears.

My job is not to sell you something. My job is to put information in your hands that will make you a better marketer and get a transparent understanding of how you can resolve issues that are preventing you from getting what you want.

I think that I told you this already – there was a time (early 2,000’s) when online marketing was what I call “the wild, wild, Web”. Marketers were selling anything and everything; even junk.

Making money was king.

Nobody thought or even cared what customers needed or wanted.

Those days are long gone.

Marketers changed their mindset and realized that customers come first.

Serve your customers well and the money will follow.

We as marketers need to forget about the money and put service first.

The “Universal Law of Compensation” states that the compensation you receive will always be in direct proportion to the amount of service you give.

You must give before you get. Unwilling to give, then forget about getting. Give just a little, and you can expect just a little. You get the idea?

You may have noticed the change in attitude over the years. I know that I did.

The most important characteristic of a successful online marketer is mindset.

It’s not SEO, it’s not traffic, it’s not e-mail marketing, it’s not ads or funnels, or landing pages.

It’s YOU.

For that reason, you need to work twice as hard on YOU as you do on your business.

So what do I mean by that?

Is your attitude positive or negative most of the time? Negative mindset will get you nowhere. So become a positive thinking person – always.

Here’s a brief summary of how I did that over a few years. (I used to be real negative)

I hang around positive people. You become like the 5 people you hang around most.
Any information that I have that is negative, stops with me. I don’t pass it on to others.
I’m a reader. I read books that empower me with good information. I don’t read fiction.
I avoid the news. All news is normally bad news so I catch the weather and sports. That’s it.
I rarely watch TV. Most programs are negative in nature and screw up my attitude.

Your life is created daily by what you think about most. So think about what you WANT and stop thinking about what you DON’T WANT.

If you do this, you will attract what you want, to yourself instead of what you don’t want.

There is no such thing as destiny.

There are no forces outside yourself that are controlling you or your situation.

Do this exercise this week and see what you learn. Try going one week without complaining either out loud or in your mind. If you trip up, start the 7 days over again.

It’s difficult, so don’t get down on yourself if you can’t do it at first try.

The point is to make you a more positive person.

I could write a book on this subject but I want to keep this e-mail short. I’ll share more tomorrow.

My intention is to give you the tools you need in order to get what you want, whatever that might be. Doesn’t matter.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers but I do know where to find the answers.

And once we are done with mindset, I want to talk to you about money.

You see, you are rich but don’t know it yet. I’m going to tell you why tomorrow and then share with you how to bring more money into your life. Promise.

(HINT – this has nothing to do with joining or buying anything)

Money isn’t everything, but it does take money to do just about everything.

That got their attention. The next day I sent the following e-mail. There are actually four emails to this series of “help them” messages. By looking at open rates, clicks, and the messages that were sent to my personal Inbox (I’ll show you those later), I know for a fact that their trust and attitude toward me had changed. I was connecting with them. And they were beginning to trust me. Still I wanted to drive the point home so I sent them this next e-mail.

E-mail Message #2 of 4 (the stuff they want to hear)

Subject Line: Important – Getting what you want – Chapter Two

Hi Peeps,

READ THIS MESSAGE TO THE END. NO SKIMMING PLEASE. THE KEY TO RICHES ARE IN THIS MESSAGE.

Yesterday I shared with you how to get what you want by first preparing your mindset. That’s so important.

One test to see how you feel about yourself is to look in the mirror. Make eye contact. What do you see?

If you love the person you see in the mirror, everything is okay. If you feel otherwise, something is wrong and needs to be fixed.

I know it sounds weird but you literally have to love yourself in order to successfully give fully to other people or a business.

I need to tell you some other things you can do to fix your mindset. But we’ll do that tomorrow.

I promised to tell you how you can get more money, so the rest of the story on mindset will have to wait.

Money – does money seem to allude you?

Remember, don’t believe a word I say. I’ll give you good references to verify that I speak the truth.

Did you know that you have an image in your mind before you do anything? Try it.

You can’t even use the bathroom without first seeing an image of yourself in the bathroom.

Your mind, especially your subconscious mind works entirely with images. Thoughts produce images in your mind.

If you are not a person who spends time thinking, especially about what you want, you need to become one.

Your mind is the only thing in this world over which you have complete control. Nothing else. So let’s use it.

Let’s use your mind to get some more money for you.

Your mind is more powerful than a multitude of super computers. But it has this strange quirk where it can’t tell the difference between images that you form in your mind and reality.

We call the following, tricking your mind or programming your mind. All you need is a specific thought image, repetition, and belief.

You see, forming images in your mind are not enough. You need to convince your mind that what you see in your “mind’s eye” is real. And that takes belief.

When you form a specific image in your mind of what you want, or the lifestyle that you desire and you see that image often, especially before you go to sleep and again when you wake, you are giving your subconscious mind specific instructions which it must obey.

But first you need to convince your mind that what you see is real through your belief and your actions.

Your subconscious mind’s primary responsibility is to follow the orders which you give it.

The subconscious mind is extremely susceptible to repetition and you visualizing images of what you want.

When you attach belief and actions to this, your subscious mind will elicit the help of all the resources in the Universe to move what it is that you desire, towards you. We call that attraction.

You are attracting what you want, like attracting money, to yourself.

It doesn’t matter where the money comes from. Forget about that completely.

The Universe knows where to find it. It flows everywhere. We just need to get it to flow to you.

AND YOU CAN DO THAT WITH SOME PRACTICE, THOUGHT, REPETITION, AND BELIEF.

Images and visualization with belief are the keys. Don’t go for the cars, house, yacht, vacations all at once. Be specific. Start with just money.

Get an image in your mind of envelopes of money accumulating in your mailbox.

See yourself bringing the mail to the kitchen table, opening the envelopes, and making little piles of bills according to their denomination.

Then take the cash you have on hand and put it in some envelopes.

Put those envelopes in your mailbox.

Wait about an hour and then go get the mail, sit at the kitchen table, and sort the bills out of the envelopes.

This helps make it real. We are tricking your mind by performing an action directly related to what you see in your mind daily.

Your subconscious mind, not knowing if this is real or just an image, will make it real over time if you complete this task on a daily basis. Repetition is the key.

How much time? That all depends on much belief you can muster and how quickly you can do this.

It could be weeks, months, or years. It depends entirely on you.

Don’t question how this happens. Just believe it.

Any questions will tip off your mind that we are tricking it into giving you want you want.

You can do this with anything. A car, a new house, a set of new golf clubs, it doesn’t matter.

That’s why I asked you in a previous e-mail to stop thinking about what you don’t want and start thinking about what you do want.

P.S. – the abundance that you desire was given to you at birth. It will come to you once you develop the proper mindset, discipline, and belief necessary to receive it. It’s there.

It just takes some practice and belief on your part.

I hit at the crux in this message. In message #1, I told them that their problem is not their business – It’s them. They need to work on themselves and change their attitude and mindset. Otherwise they are wasting their time in online marketing.

In message #2, I told them what they really wanted to hear – how to attract money to yourself just by changing how you think. Tough concepts but easy to apply. And these concepts DO get results. I told them not to believe anything I say without checking other sources to verify that I speak the truth. I gave them the resources to read and verify.

Then in message #3, I sent them this to show them that I don’t just preach this stuff, I live it. I want them to know that I was a mess and a failure until I took all I’m teaching them and applied it to myself. Here’s the message.

Subject Line: IMPORTANT – How to Get What you Want – Chapter Three

Hi Peeps,

Today, I’m going to share with you the specific actions that I take on a daily basis in order to maintain my positive mindset for online business building and attracting what I want to myself versus relying on something ridiculous like destiny or luck.

We’ve already talked about the most important characteristic of an online marketer – mindset.

And we talked about how abundance and money are already yours for the taking if you will simply adopt a visualization and belief system that puts you in the best position to receive what is rightfully yours.

Review “Getting what you want” chapter one and two if you missed or skimmed this information.

Now here’s what I have done for the last ten years on a daily basis to maintain my mindset and attract only what I want to myself.

I set goals and write them down. Behavioral studies have shown that those who write their goals on paper achieve them. Those who just keep this stuff in their heads, do not.

I aim high but make sure my goals are achievable.

If you want to get somewhere, other than where you are now, you have to define what that “somewhere” is. Right? Setting goals does that.

And I’m assuming that everyone wants to “raise the bar” and move their lives forward. Otherwise, why are you checking out online passive income opportunities?

You’re doing that because you want to stop being a slave to your job. Or you want to stop being a slave to the bank. Or something like that.

Then I make notes on the same piece of paper, what I am going to do to achieve those goals. A plan.

Next I set a specific date on which those goals will be achieved. I do this so that I am accountable. It’s even better to be accountable to someone else, like your spouse or best friend.

Then I review my goal sheet and plan once before I go to bed each night and again upon rising the next day. These are the times when your subconscious mind is most susceptible to suggestion.

And I want my subconscious mind chewing on this stuff all night and all day. I have found by doing this that the toughest obstacles are resolved by my subconscious mind while I am asleep.

This has happened to you too. Remember what your friends and family say when you can’t get that lawnmower or other mechanical device to run?

“Sleep on it, honey. You’ll have a whole new outlook on the issue in the morning.”

And what happened? You woke the next day and solved the issue with the lawnmower.

How did that happen? You didn’t know it at the time but your subconscious mind worked on the problem all night and presented the solution to you the next morning.

Summarizing…

Set goals and write them on paper. Aim high, but make them achievable.
Make a plan (which can be revised) and write that down.
Set a specific date by which these goals will be accomplished.
Review your goals once before retiring, and again upon rising.
Visualize in your mind what your life will be like when these goals are achieved.
Remember, your mind doesn’t know the difference between an image in your mind and reality. So once you believe that you have reached your goal, there it is. Real.

In addition to the above, I read. I love to read. If you are not a reader, get audio books that you can listen to in the car or at home. But make sure they are positive books and supportive of your goals.

I usually read about three books at once. My mood determines which I will pick up.

I’m currently reading “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” by T. Harv Eker, “Letting Go of the Words” by Ginny Redish, “Awaken the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins, and “Riches Within Your Reach” by Robert Collier.

I also do some exercise in the morning to support my body and maintain my weight. When you feel good, you are good.

Throughout the day I also remove negative situations, people, magazines, TV, and anything else that doesn’t support my objectives. If I can’t avoid negative input, I just ignore it. It goes in one ear and out the other onto the floor where it belongs.

Do you think that is obsessive?

Tell me this. Are your goals, compared to where you are now, obsessive? Probably. So why wouldn’t you do whatever it takes to reach those goals? You need some shortcuts and I have given those to you.

That’s what it is going to take to be rich. Whatever it takes, you do it, and do it cheerfully.

Geez, I forgot to mention getting outside of your comfort zone. Nothing happens in your comfort zone. Success lies outside of your comfort zone.

I’m going to make it a note to expand on that tomorrow because it is so, so important.

In the mean time, please take this stuff to heart. I’m showing you the easy way to riches. Most people wouldn’t tell you this stuff.

You can do it. I’m 101% positive that you can take these simple steps forward and accomplish great things.

I know it’s a big change for you. But in order to make a ton of money you must be a warrior. And a warrior never gives up and he/she does whatever it takes to get the job done.

You are that warrior. Just reach deep down inside yourself and you will find that warrior attitude inside of you.

In the final message in this series of four messages, I addressed the importance of getting out of your comfort zone and staying out of it as much as possible.

So they were told that YOU need to change in e-mail message #1 in the series. Then I told them in message #2  how they can begin to attract money to themselves with the right belief system and a much improved attitude. I used myself as an example in message #3 to show them that, yep, I really do this stuff on a daily basis and so can you. And in message #4 (the last in the series) I told them that nothing happens in your comfort zone. So do the things that are uncomfortable, do whatever it takes to accomplish what you want out of life.

And I capped off the whole four day series of messages by sharing with them an early announcement that they would have a chance to join The Four Percent Group for free.

That removed a burden from their shoulders (the cost of belonging to The Four Percent Group) and hopefully set them free to improve themselves, improve their attitude so that they could positively attract other positive things into their lives, and stay out of their comfort zone in order to achieve maximum success.

Subject: IMPORTANT – How to Get What You Want -Chapter Four and a Special Announcement

Hi Peeps,

We”ve talked about Mindset and how important it is in Chapter One.

Then we talked about how to get Money now in Chapter Two.

In Chapter Three, I shared with you how I handle mindset, and getting money on a daily basis.

In Chapter Four, we are going to talk about getting outside of your comfort zone, because nothing will happen in your life until you do.

What is your comfort zone? Everybody has one. And it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out what yours is.

Since I haven’t worked a day since September 2, 2007 and I live in my dream house on 19,000 acres of water in the wilderness of Wisconsin’s northwoods, I guess I would have to say that’s my comfort zone.

You can imagine how shocked I was when my mentor, Shaqir Hussyin to whom I paid $40K to mentor me for a year, told me, “Scott, nothing happens until you get outside of your comfort zone. If you don’t do that, you might as well find something else to do besides online marketing.”

So I pushed myself.

I hate to fly but I booked a flight from Minneapolis to Las Vegas last year just to get out of my comfort zone.

I made it difficult. I had to drive 4 1/2 hours to Minneapolis to make my flight.

I stayed in Las Vegas for three nights in order to attend a conference.

Then on my flight back, which arrived in Minneapolis at midnight, I had to drive through the night another 4 1/2 hours to get home in the wee hours of the morning.

I was outside of my comfort zone where I belonged.

Shaqir said I have to do videos. I hate getting in front of the camera. Nevertheless, I set up a studio in a spare bedroom and began shooting videos.

Then he said I need to do webinars and live events. I need to get on someones stage or my own. I made my slide decks for the webinars but haven’t moved forward to webinar presentation or getting on stage.

I will. But that’s really uncomfortable for me.

Do you see my point?

If you are in online marketing, these types of things need to be done in order for you to succeed.

You can’t just sit at home on your computer and make things happen.

You have to get outside your comfort zone and do the things that you regard as uncomfortable.

I know marketers who will schedule months in the Caribbean just to shoot film of themselves doing all kinds of interesting things in interesting places.

I know marketers who employ a videographer full-time to follow them around and shoot video whether they be here or someplace else in the world.

These marketers are staying outside their comfort zone because they know that is what it takes to win big in online marketing and that is where the money is.

Are you willing to do all this?

Of course you are. There is nothing scary about doing video, webinars, and live events.

Seriously, you are who you are. And you are expected to be nothing more than that in your videos, online webinars, and your travels to get great shots in far away places.

I don’t want to leave this subject until I share with you why it is so hard to get outside of your comfort zone.

What is the primary function of your mind? It is SURVIVAL. That makes sense. The primary job of your mind is to keep you alive.

Your mind is primarily responsible for protecting you.

You have been conditioned all your life from birth by parents, friends, teachers, TV, relatives, acquaintances etc..

You are a product of “them” in your thinking.

When you make a decision, that little voice that speaks inside your head tells you what to do in order to keep you safe. But that’s not you. That’s “them” speaking and influencing your action.

You are safest in your comfort zone and your protective mind does not like it when you venture out of your comfort zone.

Thus, the warnings that you get when you venture to your zone boundaries.

The best way to combat this is to say to that little voice, “thank you for sharing” but I choose to do the following.

Then make your OWN choices, get up on stage and ignore that little voice in your head. Ignore your conditioning and be YOU for a change.

Ignore how you have been conditioned all your life. Ignore “them”.

I challenge you to stay outside of your comfort zone as much as possible. If you do that, you will go far indeed.

I’m confident you can do that.

Remember, You are a Warrior. Warriors do whatever it takes in all situations. Defeat is not an option.

Reread the last three chapters of messages that I have sent to you.

This is what it is going to take for you to be rich.

But none of it is hard. It’s just a change in the way that you normally think and do things.

On a final note, take notice how in this four message series, I didn’t promote or pitch anything. Those four messages are all about them; not my offer.

I didn’t promote them. I just sneaked them in there. And yes, my subscribers did click on them.

When I first started the series of four e-mail above, I just wanted to find a way to connect to my subscribers instead of writing e-mails to what seemed like a “black hole in space”.

The obvious answer was to help them in whatever way I can.

Geography prevents me from helping them directly with their issues. So I shared the knowledge I had researched and accumulated over a 10-12 year period, and which had helped me greatly.

As I said earlier, it was a risk. They could have told me “your nuts” and unsubscribed leaving me with a subscriber list of zero subscribers. It went the other way.

I rarely get unsubscribes anymore. I think by opening up and sharing openly, I connected, they connected, and I feel that trust is there.

I’m happy with the results. I encourage all e-mail marketers to share their passions and strategies for maintaining a positive mindset and a “can do” attitude with their subscribers.

I’m just getting started. I used to hate sending e-mails everyday to subscribers. Now I enjoy it. And I have plenty of ammunition left to share.

The NEXT “Big Thing” – The 4% Group and IMC Disrupts the Internet

Disruption

In the last few weeks I have been telling all of my on-line friends and students to join what I feel is the greatest opportunity to ever be launched in the IM space or niche.

  • when Apple innovation disrupted just about everything with their stream of new, innovative products and technology

You get the idea.

What happens during these disruptive innovations?

What happens is that those on the “inside” of new innovations and so-called “early adopters” profit wildly from the disruptive forces at work in the marketplace and the economy.
The wave of disruptive innovation that is sweeping over the Internet and the $112 billion dollar adult learning marketplace today is the world’s first physical college for Internet marketing.

Background

Earlier this year, a small group of on-line marketing millionaires were discussing what is wrong with Internet marketing. Why do 96% of on-line marketers fail to make more than $100 bucks while the other 4% go on to become marketing millionaires?

What can be done to level the playing field so that everyone has a equal chance of succeeding? How can we best help these folks?

And then an idea, a unique innovation, a stroke of genius was born while these three or four guys masterminded this subject and its associated issues.

There is no place you can go and learn how to effectively market a product or service on-line.

On-line marketing is not taught at colleges and universities or anywhere else for that matter.

Either they wind up learning only a small, specific strategy that is only a fraction of the total on-line marketing picture or the unstructured information is blasted at them like a firehose and they suffer information overload in order to learn at least some of the material.

The marketing gurus have a wealth of information to share but they have no idea how to teach effectively. They are marketers, not teachers.

So there needs to be a way to deliver on-line marketing knowledge in a structured way so that the new people who come to IM can learn effectively and receive everything he/she needs to know instead of a tiny piece of the puzzle from a couple of books or seminars.

Traditional learning at colleges and universities is structured and includes a detailed curriculum, usually written by Phd. or Masters degreed teachers. They know how to deliver course material so that effective learning takes place.

But as I already pointed out, colleges and universities do not teach Internet marketing and never will.

Why? Because the risk are too great. Colleges spend years developing new course curriculums and turn out high quality learning.

But the Internet moves at light speed. Things change almost daily. What works one month may be useless the next.

You see the problem? Curriculum at a traditional college would never be able to keep up. So they avoid the subject of on-line marketing.

Liberal arts colleges and universities are also guilty of teaching subject matter but not the specific skills that are needed right now in order for students to find jobs and begin making a living right out of college.

Too many times students from traditional colleges graduate with a lot of book leaning only to join the unemployment lines while they figure out how to pay back the hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans.

There is a Solution for On-line Entrepreneurs and Businesses

The Internet is now the world’s marketplace. The “brick and mortar” businesses are in decline and those that are still around spend much time and money trying to learn how to effectively offer their products and services on-line.

“Brick and mortar” businesses suffer from the same issue as individual on-line marketers. Where and how do you learn this stuff?

Back to those Three or Four Guys and Their Mastermind

So getting back to those three or four guys who are trying to solve this learning issue for the desperate need of those who need to learn how to market effectively online, consider the following:

And what if we brought in college Phd’s and Masters degreed instructors, who are masters at creating structured learning and curriculum, but know nothing about on-line marketing.

Now that’s a stroke of genius. This is where we left off before I interrupted the discussion in order to clarify some things about TECademics products and the affiliate vs. student programs.

Regarding the $4,800 commission that I threw out there – That’s the commission for one referral to the $12k Elite package. This is the package that I recommend for affiliates. And you will understand why I feel that way once I share the “Matching Millions” program with you.

If you do that math, it would take an affiliate 2.5 referrals to break even on their $12k investment. 2.5 times $4800/referral = $12k.

The On-Line Marketer’s Mindset – What Is It?

What Is The Marketers Mindset?

Today, you hear about “the on-line marketer’s mindset” everywhere. Virtually all of the other “top dogs” in on-line marketing agree that not getting your thinking correct and expecting to win big in on-line marketing is not going to happen. The majority of on-line marketers do not get this right at the outset and wind up failing in the end.

But no one ever tells you what exactly they are talking about. Or you get a little piece of how the on-line marketer needs to think, but the rest of the story is left out.

These characteristics and habits were assembled from interviewing a millionaire marketer that I had admired for the past year. He didn’t discover the marketer’s mindset per se. His knowledge came to him as a learning experience while in the trenches. As he thought over his journey in the on-line world, this is what he said is important if you are bent on succeeding as an on-line marketer.

I’m going to give you the whole picture and leave nothing out. So when you hear someone refer to “the marketer’s mindset” you will finally know what they are talking about.

Your mindset as an on-line marketer is more important than anything that you do on the Internet or your computer. Your mindset will sustain you when 98% of other on-line marketers quit or fail.

Why is the Marketer’s Mindset Important?

Your mindset is important primarily because in order to be successful at on-line marketing, you have to think differently than a person off the street. If you don’t change your thinking, you will fail. Once you read what I am about to teach you, you will understand that.

Work as hard at changing the way that you think about your business as you do about conducting the daily tasks associated with your business and you will succeed.

The components of the “on-line marketer’s mindset” are listed below in no particular order. This subject is not “deep”, you just need to make some small but very important changes to the way that you think. If you struggle with specific characteristics, focus on that characteristic until you have mastered it. Then identify another characteristic that you wish to master.

How You Think

If you want to be an on-line marketer, the first change you must make is you must think of your on-line business as a real bona-fide business and not just a hobby that you do in your spare time. Treating your on-line business as a hobby is one of the primary reasons for on-line business failures.

You must begin thinking and acting like a millionaire business owner. Otherwise, you cannot be one. This is something that you also hear a lot, “you can’t be a millionaire until you first think and act like a millionaire”.

This is actually a mind trick. By being what you want to become, you are actually tricking your mind into thinking that you already ARE what you want to become. That thought transition is important. This can be applied to any walk of life. If you want to become a famous surgeon, start thinking now like a surgeon. How you think and act will take you there that much quicker since what you think and how you act is what you will become.

How do you think and act like a successful millionaire business owner? You make gut decisions based on your instincts. You take calculated risks. You get out of your comfort zone and routine and take action on matters of importance even if that action makes you feel uncomfortable. You act when opportunities are presented to you instead of just thinking about them. You stop thinking about money as a scare resource. It’s not. Money is just a means to an end. And you have plenty of it regardless of what your bank account tells you. Your bank account cannot see the checks that are in the mail on their way to you. Start visualizing the money that is coming your way and it will appear according to your belief in yourself and your business.

Priority One – Build A List

Start, grow, and build an audience, not just a List. Forget about leads. It’s far easier to build an audience of raving fans who love to hear from you and buy your products. Always be building your list; not someone else’s list. Sell, sell, sell to your list but you must take time to relate to your audience so that they get to know, like, and trust, you. Be patient. Your audience will not buy from you until they know, like, and trust you.

E-mail is still the #1 money-maker on the Internet. If Google killed your website, your ads, your traffic, and your products, you would still have your e-mail list. With just that list, you can re-build your business.

E-mail your list of subscribers every day. Make this your first priority for the day. Don’t worry if it takes you a couple of hours to come up with a good e-mail. Always tell your readers what you are doing. Give them some tips or something to think about. They need to know that you are a real person. A good practice to get into is to tell them what you will be sending them tomorrow. This creates anticipation so that they are expecting to hear from you tomorrow. Your message could be the only one that they will open.

Priority Two – Write Down Your Goals

You’re heard it said that those who record their goals to paper, achieve them. Take the time to commit your goals to paper. Then review them twice per day; once upon rising in the morning and again when you retire at the end of the day.

The goal is condition your mind to your goals. Your mind learns through repetition. Write them down, review them regularly, and watch them come to fruition.

Procrastination

Procrastination is the enemy. Avoid it at all cost. If a task that must be done keeps nagging at you, do it now. Even if it’s a task with no pay-back, like paying the bills. If you don’t address procrastination, it will grow and spread like a virus.

Value

Provide 10-20 times more value than what you charge for. Always over-deliver. Customers don’t buy things that they NEED. They buy things that they WANT. Buying is an emotional decision; not a rational decision. So pack your product offerings with value so that buying your products becomes a no-brainer for customers.

Your Comfort Zone

And as long as we already mentioned it, you MUST get out of the comfort zone that you have built around yourself. That might be a little scary at first, but push yourself. The really big income is not inside your comfort zone. Ask yourself, what should I be doing today that is not inside of my comfort zone?

Do you hate talking to people on the phone? Then get on the phone with someone. Do you hate making videos? Then create a 90-day challenge for yourself to make a video every day for 90 days. Do you hate webinars? Than start doing them to communicate with your audience and clients.

Make Gut Decisions

Another characteristic that we mentioned is gut decisions. Make gut decisions. The really great decisions come from what you know are good decisions, without even having to think about them. Successful on-line marketers don’t waste time thinking about decisions. They act. Their instincts and gut tell them which direction to go. Practice doing that. You won’t be right 100% of the time. But you will learn from your mistakes and that will make you wiser.

Learn From Your Mistakes

And while we are at it, make mistakes and learn from them. Don’t think of a mistake as a failure. If you learn a valuable lesson by making a mistake, than you will become a very wise man.

Thomas Edison failed with approximately 3,000 experiments to learn how to make the electric light bulb. Had he not make all those mistakes, he would have never found the combination of components that work to produce the light bulb.

Quitting Is Not An Option

And that leads to another very important characteristic of the on-line marketers mindset – quitting is not an option. You never quit nor think about it.

Napoleon Hill in his book, Think and Grow Rich, tells us of a man from the East who went West to find gold and make his fortune. Mr. Darby sold and invested everything he owned in his quest to find and own a gold mine. He excavated for years until all his money and ambition was gone and then he quit and went back East to where he had lived originally.

A former insurance agent bought Darby’s failed gold mine and began excavation. He had only dug three feet from where Mr. Darby had stopped and quit, when the insurance agent discovered a huge vein of gold. The insurance agent got rich. Darby had quit when he was only three feet from gold. Never quit. Your most lucrative campaign could be your next campaign.

Think Ceaselessly

Think, think, and then think some more. Creative thinking is best and usually comes to you as a hunch. Write these thoughts down. These nuggets don’t show up all that often.

Ever notice how most people have earplugs on and are listening to music or talk radio when running, walking, or just sitting? Or what about those who walk around staring at their cell phone? The want distraction so that they don’t have to think. Thinking is painful for some. But you need to be a thinker and creator. Ditch the headphones and use walking, running, or sitting as time for thinking.

Simplify

Simplify Everything. Simplify, Simplify……

I used to want to do local marketing, then niche sites, then CPA, then software creation, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Don’t do that. Decide how you are going to make your fortune and focus on just that one task until you have mastered it. One focus. One thing. Then you can explore other areas.

Do The Opposite of What Everyone Else Is Doing

Figure out what everyone else is doing and then do the opposite right thing. 99.9% of people are broke or living off their last paycheck. You don’t want to be like them.

Build Your Business on Paid Traffic

Build your business on paid traffic. Paid traffic is the fastest, most scalable, most predictable form of traffic for your business. It’s controllable. As long as you have considered the economics, you will be fine. By economics, I mean test to insure that your results will have more value than your investment. It doesn’t matter if you spend $1,000 to make $1010. You still came out in the black. And all you need to do to achieve better results is to tweak your landing page or traffic provider. The problem is usually one of the two.

Focus Time

Get in the habit of working on your business in 2-3 hour increments of “focus time”. You may think that the harder and longer you work on your business than the greater your chances of succeeding. That’s not true. You accomplish very little when you are tired and worn out. Additionally, your mind grows weary from staring at the same work for hours on end. You need creative thinking; not a lazy mind. So do your most important work when you are fresh and then for no more than three hours. Then go do something else.

During your focus time, you are not to be disturbed. Advise others in your home office. Shut the door. Turn off your cell phone. If you have a land line phone in your office, unplug it and put it in another room. Advise those in your home that you will not be taking phone calls during your focus time. If visitors come to your front door, they should be told that you are very busy and you will get back to them. Shut down your e-mail. In fact, mute any sound that your compute might make. You get the idea?

Then focus on your business and nothing more for three hours. You can set aside more than one focus time during the day. But treat each three hour period the same. Make sure your mind is fresh. No interruptions.

Maintaining Balance In Your Life Is Important

Keep balance in your life. This is one of the biggest mistakes that on-line marketers make. They spend entire days on the computer until they are wasted. And then they do the same the next day.

Their minds are stale from looking at the same thing every day. Their thinking is dull. They need to get off the computer and out amongst real people. The computer is very impersonal. When you have been cooped up in the house for days, have you ever noticed how different you feel after having been with real people? Better yet, these real people are your potential customers. Talk to them. Learn about their successes and failures. Take time to listen to your customers.

Stay Physically Fit

Keep your body as physically fit as your mind is mentally fit for business. Exercise. Walk a mile or two a day. When the body is hurting, the mind cannot focus on the work that needs to be done.

Stay In Touch With Those You Love

Take time to interact with your family and get on the same page with them. You will find that they will be more inclined to honor your focus time if you take time for them.

Work Should Be Fun

Make your work FUN. If you don’t find your work to be fun, then why are you doing it? Don’t allow yourself to get tense or worried while you are working.

Prioritize Everything You Do In Your Business

Make a list of what you need to get done each week and day. And then number each task with the most important task being #1 and so forth. Never sit down at the computer or your business without knowing exactly what you are going to work on. You must have a plan to follow.

The highest priority tasks should be those that produce the most return. Many marketers do the “fun tasks” first and leave the tasks with the highest payout until last. Reverse that order and your monthly income will grow that much faster.

Many marketing tasks are a real drag and we tend to steer away from those. I always found keyword research to be a pain. My website rankings will verify that. I know what I need to do……..

E-mail Can Be A Real Distraction

E-mail is a real interruption to productive work. Set up times to address e-mail and then stay out of it. Check it when you get up in the morning, again at noon, again before the evening meal, and once more before you retire. That should be sufficient. Do not waste hours in e-mail. Spend that time on your important business tasks.

Texting Is A Nuisance

Texting is more of an interruption than e-mail. And the information in a text is usually just chatter. Put some controls on texting and use that time productively.

Don’t Let Your Best Ideas Escape You

Keep a small notepad handy in your pocket or vehicle and write ideas down before you forget them. If you are a blogger, write down your idea for an article. These hunches usually produce the best articles.

Use The 80/20 Rule In Your Business

Spend 20% of your time learning, 80% of your time doing. You absolutely must always read a good positive book(s). Always have some available. Do not read fiction. You want to know how other successful men and women think. Read about the people you want to be like. You should finish a good positive book every two weeks.

Always read awhile from your good book before you turn out the light and retire. The last information that you put into your head before going to sleep is what your mind works on all night while you sleep. Your mind never stops working. Make sure that what you put in there before retiring is positive.

Driving Is Wasted Time – Use It To Advance Your Business

Consider having good, instructional audios on CD for use in your car. Traveling from point A to point B in a car is mundane and boring. The news on the radio is almost always negative. Music is nothing more than a distraction. But what if you could learn something that you didn’t know from an instructional CD which you could play on your car’s CD player? Which would have a bigger impact on your business; the negative news, music, or a learning course on a CD?

Invest In Yourself, Hang With People You Want to Become

Invest in yourself as your business grows. Go to seminars. The fastest way to get to where you want to be is to find people who are doing what you want to achieve and model them. Don’t try and reinvent the wheel. Copy those who have already accomplished what you want to accomplish and become them.

Who you hang around with is who you become. If you want to be rich, hang around rich people who you respect and admire. If you are always in the company of red-necks who have no money, that is who you will become.

Stop Caring About What Others Think About You

Stop worrying about what other people think of you. The only people who are ‘liked’ by everyone are those who do nothing, say nothing, and ultimately accomplish nothing. Many marketers are laughed at for trying to get rich via Internet marketing. Ignore them. The laughter is only temporary.

Make Things Happen In Your Business Or Nothing Will Happen

My father used to tell me that there are three types of people in the world – those that make things happen, those that watch things happen, and those that stand around and wonder what the hell just happened. You must be in the first group – those that make things happen. Remember in a previous life when you were bored and waiting for a change to make your life more interesting and fun? Nothing ever happens until you make it happen. So be that person that makes things happen.

Learn What Your Customers Want and Need

Learn what your customer’s greatest needs are and what their biggest struggles are. Just ask them and they will be glad to tell you. Seek to answer these needs and resolve their struggles by being a problem-solver. This tactic alone will make you rich.

Out-Source and Delegate

Don’t try and do everything yourself. Get help. Start outsourcing early. You must delegate everything that someone else can do for you better and faster. Odesk.com and Fiverr.com are great places to get inexpensive help for mundane or repetitive tasks. Consider a “virtual assistant”. You will know when it’s time to get help when you start feeling the work and information overload.

Employees vs. Contractors

There will come a time when you need permanent help. Get private contractors and not employees. Employees require too much government paper work, programs, benefits, taxes, reporting, etc..

Website Performing Badly? Speed it Up With These Tips

Optimizing your website for maximum speed when loading pages in a browser is extremely important if you want to retain visitors to your website. Statistics show that the average Internet user will wait 3 seconds or less for a page to load before they venture off of your site and go browse somewhere else.

Before you can engage your website visitor with your valuable content, you must first insure that they stay on your site long enough to see your content. You can do that by insuring your Home Page loads fast and that load speed is consistent throughout the rest of your pages.

There are specific tasks that you can complete to insure that your site loads fast and remains that way. None of these tasks are particularly difficult nor expensive. You do NOT need to work tirelessly on SEO to accomplish good page loading speed.

Let’s look at some of the most important page load optimization strategies and then I’ll show you where the “tweaks” can be found in your back-office.

In these examples, we will be using a WordPress website since WordPress dominates the content delivery platform on the Internet.

Visitors to my website blog frequently comment that the site that you are on right now, ScottAlanReed Dot Com, loads extremely fast. And they wonder if I’m doing some tricks to make that happen. I’M NOT! I’ll show you in the video, exactly what I do to insure fast load time.

 

Get an IP Address That Is Yours, and Yours Alone

 

By default, when you sign up with a web hosting company, your site shares an IP address with any number of other websites at the same hosting service. That means that your web traffic is competing with the web traffic of other websites that are sharing the same IP address that your site uses.

If those other websites are getting a lot of traffic, yours slows down and vice versa. This leaves your load time at the mercy of whoever is sharing the same IP address as you. So stop sharing your IP address with other websites so that the speed of your website is not dependent on theirs.

Think of an IP address as being the highway into and out of a web server, and one to many domains . You share that highway with other websites; but you don’t have to. My hosting company (Bluehost.com) offers a dedicated IP address to my website for about $4.85/month. My IP address is mine alone. I don’t share that highway with anyone. I share the web server with others. But the highway into and out of my website belongs to me.

If my website ever slows to a crawl, I would want to consider getting and paying for a dedicated server so that I can monopolize the memory and CPU power of the server for my needs alone. That would be expensive at $125/month. That time will arrive soon enough. For now, I recommend a dedicated IP address for your website in order to boost your sites page load time.

 

Run Your Domain On CloudFlare – It’s Free

 

CloudFlare is a CDN or Content Delivery/Distributed Network. A CDN is a large distributed system of servers deployed in multiple data centers around the world and Internet. The goal of a CDN is to serve content to end-users with high availability and high performance.

CloudFlare works just like Amazon.com. Amazon owns hundreds of data centers around the world.

Amazon handles an incredible amount of traffic quickly by recognizing the visitor’s geographical location and then by connecting the visitor to the Amazon data center that is geographically closest to them in order to maximize the speed of the Amazon website.

I use CloudFlare for ScottAlanReed.com and several of my other websites. I don’t pay anything for this service. Use of CloudFlare speeded up my blog website dramatically and is the primary reason why I am able to achieve fast page load times.

I’ll show you how to add your website to CloudFlare in the video below.

Also there is a CloudFlare plugin that you must install, but it’s also free and there are no complicated options to set up. All of the plugins that I mention in this article are free from WordPress.org and can be found in Plugins | Add New | Plugin Name (or search).

If you have heard a rumor that the CloudFlare network is rife with spammers, don’t believe it. I heard the same rumor a year ago before I started using CloudFlare. My sites are not getting spammed nor attacked. So much for rumors.

Use a Caching Plugin

 

You absolutely must have a cache plugin on your website. A cache stores the most frequently accessed pages and page elements of your website in memory so that they can be retrieved quickly the next time the page is accessed. If you are not using a cache, every single page on your site that is accessed is being fetched from disc or the server HDD. Fetching something from disc is a slow process.

There are good cache plugins and not so good cache plugins. I recommend WP Super Cache created by Automattic, W3 Total Cache, or WP Super Cache – Clear All Cache.  Yoast has a caching plugin that is good but it has a ton of settings. They can be complicated to set up. But the one that I use isn’t too technical. And it gets the job done. This speed enhancing strategy is likely the second most effective page load speed booster, second only to CloudFlare.

 

Keep a Handle on Article Revisions, Visitor Comments, and WordPress Databases

 

In the course of composing new article content for your website, you create multiple revisions of the same article. Every time you save your work, you create another draft copy of the article that you are creating.

I have over 60 articles on my blog. It’s not uncommon for me to have 10 revisions of one article before I am ready to publish that article. If that were true for all articles that would be 600 copies of content of which I am only concerned with the final published draft of 60 articles.

Get rid of the old revisions. They drag down the performance of your website.

User Comments can do the same thing. It’s not unusual for me to have 4-6 thousand SPAM comments every couple of days residing in the SPAM queue waiting for my review and approval.

Not all of these comments are really SPAM. A SPAM comment on my website is any comment that contains more than two links. The primary link in a comment is the name of your website. Your e-mail address is another link. If you put something in the body of your comment like “please visit my blog at this link and tell me what you think”, that is a third link and your comment will fall into the SPAM queue.

Many websites automatically delete SPAM sight-unseen by the site owner. Most SPAM must be deleted manually. Since not all SPAM is really SPAM, I review most SPAM quickly and look for the comments that were made by the visitor who never intended to SPAM my site. It is easy to accidentally create SPAM. I have found some of my best and most constructive comments in SPAM. It’s obvious that the person who created the comment did not intend to create SPAM. And it’s a simple matter to weed out the offending link and approve the comment.

However, no one has the time to review and edit 6,000 SPAM comments. I’ll peruse a half-dozen pages of SPAM and delete the rest. Leaving massive numbers of unapproved comments in your comments queue will drag down the performance of your website. I’ve seen SPAM comments occupy 166 pages in the SPAM queue. That’s like pulling an anchor around your website. Get rid of that dead weight and do it often.

Fortunately, there is a handy WordPress plugin called “Optimize Databases After Deleting Revisions” that will handle this. The plugin not only keeps your WordPress databases clean, it also deletes all old article revisions (except the most recent revision) AND empties the SPAM queue for you.

I’ll demo this plugin for you in the video below so that you will see the actual size of my website in megabytes before and after optimization. There’s a big difference. The larger your website in megabytes or gigabytes the slower it runs, unless you have taken steps to compensate for this, like moving your site to a dedicated server. It isn’t necessary to do that with most sites. And as I said before, dedicated servers are expensive.

Getting back to the “Optimize Databases After Deleting Revisions” plugin,I run this plugin after reviewing comments in order to keep my site running on all cylinders. You should too.

 

WordPress Plugins Can Impede Performance

 

This is kind of a touchy matter. You need plugins on your site. But too many or the wrong plugins can be a drag on performance. It’s a judgment call. You will have to decide if the plugin functionality is worth the drag it puts on performance. Just don’t get “plugin happy” because plugins will come with a price in lost performance for your site.

Really “heavy duty” plugins should be tested in advance of use. If performance has been affected, your visitors will let you know in their comments when page load times are slower or are getting intolerable. By “heavy duty” I mean plugins that are described as doing just about everything you can imagine except shine your shoes.

If you are not using a plugin, deactivate it and then choose to delete the plugin’s files. Deactivation does not remove the plugins files, which means that the plugin PHP code still resides on your website. When WordPress prompts you with “Delete Files?” upon deactivating a plugin, choose “Yes”. If you change your mind and find a use for the plugin you can always reinstall it.

 

Don’t Host Your Own Videos

 

Most video files are huge. Do not store them in the Media section of your WordPress website. There are plenty of free video hosting websites available. YouTube is the most obvious one. Wistia.com will also store videos for free with their free plan. Vimeo also offers free video hosting accounts.

 

Be Conscious of Image Sizes

 

Using photos on your website is important for illustration and engaging your audience. But the use of too many photos, or photos that are too large can drag down page load times. There’s no sense in loading a 20MB image file when you’re only going to display it as 300×300 pixels! Image quality is important, but only if it is noticeable. Image quality is achieved by using higher pixel concentrations (resolution). But resolutions in excess of 72 dpi (dots per inch) are not appropriate for the Web.

There are some plugins that will help you control the impact of images on your page loads. The WP Smush.it plugin will optimize JPEG compression and strip the unnecessary metadata to make photo files smaller. You might also consider the Lazy Load plugin, which will only load images when they are visible to the user.

 

Optimize Your JavaScript and CSS

 

If you still cannot get a handle on slow page loads, you might consider plugins to optimize your JavaScript and CSS. I do not use these plugins because my page load speed is good. But as websites increase in size (and they will as you add more content over time) these plugins will help speed things up.

 

For the longest time, one of the most trusted solutions for shrinking down your CSS and JavaScript files was a plugin called WP Minify. It’s still pretty good at making those files far more compressed and efficient, but the plugin hasn’t been updated for over two years. A more up to date solution would be Autoptimize, which effectively performs the same kinds of actions to your JavaScript, and CSS.

 

Summing It All Up

 

This is how I achieve fast page loads on Scott Alan Reed Dot Com. No tricks.

  • Get your own dedicated IP address.
  • Subscribe your website to CloudFlare. It’s free and it makes a big difference.
  • Use a caching plugin to cache pages and other elements that are accessed or viewed most often.
  • Use a plugin to clean your WordPress databases, the SPAM queue, and old revisions of posts.
  • Minimize plugin use. Delete plugin code that you are not using.
  • Do not store video files on your website. Use a service. Many offer free accounts.
  • Avoid huge photo files. 72 dpi resolution is sufficient for the Web. If unsure about resolution, look at the file properties.

I have not had a need to implement the following for faster page loads.

  • Use a plugin to optimize your JavaScript and CSS files.

If you have implemented all of the above steps but are still facing unacceptable page load speed, I would first consider looking around for a better hosting service. And if that doesn’t resolve your problem, you may need to consider putting your website on a dedicated file server.

Most web hosts offer several packages for improving website performance. Some hosts have optimization consulting experts on staff and available for a nominal fee. They will evaluate your website to insure that it is running at peak performance.

Web hosting is highly competitive. And because of competition, these companies use special service offerings to  compete against each other. Take advantage of these services. Since competition is stiff, these services are often offered to you at bargain prices.

The Money Tree Method

Background

Most of you already know that I dabble or have dabbled in various entrepreneurial pursuits on-line over the last three years. My current interests in the world of Internet marketing are CPA marketing and media buys. But this Money Tree Method sounds interesting. And it’s right up my alley. In a nutshell, you identify a problem that people are having, research a solution, and then present the problem and solution in an on-line course or special weblog series.

I can tell from all of your comments, which I faithfully read every day, that most of you also have entrepreneurial interests. Once you learn how to leverage your course offerings and student interests into other learning opportunities, your business income will grow exponentially; a virtual “money tree“.

Like most online entrepreneurs, I floundered for over two years while trying various strategies, attending “webbies”, sitting in on workshops, and then I got a bad case of “shiny object syndrome”. I assume that you know what that is. It’s a common disease amongst newbies that drives them to waste insane amounts of money on that next best strategy, only to meet with failure once again. It’s hard to earn a passive income via IM and it gets harder every year. Google doesn’t make that task any easier. For example, I hope that all you entrepreneurs are aware of Google’s latest priority. If you are spending your time on SEO acquiring backlinks and doing keyword research, you are wasting your time. Google’s priority for website rankings is now “social signals”. That means shares and likes on your pages.
